Tangy Blackcurrant Mojito (Print)

A refreshing classic mojito twist featuring tart homemade blackcurrant syrup for fruity sophistication in every sip.

# Ingredients:

→ Blackcurrant Syrup

01 - 1 cup fresh or frozen blackcurrants
02 - 1/3 cup granulated sugar
03 - 1/4 cup water
04 - 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

→ Mojito

05 - 12 fresh mint leaves
06 - 1 lime, cut into wedges
07 - 4 teaspoons blackcurrant syrup
08 - 3.4 fluid ounces white rum
09 - 6.8 fluid ounces soda water
10 - Ice cubes

→ Garnish

11 - Extra mint sprigs
12 - Fresh blackcurrants
13 - Lime slices

# Directions:

01 - In a small saucepan, combine blackcurrants, sugar, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until berries are soft and sugar is dissolved, approximately 5-7 minutes. Gently mash berries, then strain syrup through fine mesh sieve into a bowl. Stir in lemon juice and allow to cool completely.
02 - In each highball glass, muddle 6 mint leaves and half the lime wedges to release their essential oils and flavors.
03 - Add 2 teaspoons blackcurrant syrup and 1.7 fluid ounces white rum to each glass. Stir thoroughly to combine.
04 - Fill each glass with ice cubes and top with 3.4 fluid ounces soda water. Stir gently to integrate.
05 - Garnish each cocktail with fresh mint sprigs, blackcurrants, and lime slices. Serve immediately.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The blackcurrant syrup is tart enough to balance the rum without needing to lean on lime, so every sip feels intentional and sophisticated.
  • You can make the syrup ahead and keep it in the fridge, which means impressing people becomes ridiculously easy.
  • It's actually faster to make than you'd think, and the payoff in flavor feels like you've done something complicated.
02 -
  • Don't skip cooling the syrup completely before using it; adding warm syrup to cold rum and ice will water everything down and throw off the balance you worked to create.
  • The difference between good and mediocre muddling is knowing when to stop—over-muddled mint turns bitter and the drink tastes like you're chewing leaves instead of sipping a cocktail.
03 -
  • Chill your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes before making the drinks—it keeps everything colder longer and makes the whole experience feel more intentional.
  • The moment you add the soda water is the moment you need to serve; don't let it sit because the bubbles go flat and the drink loses its soul.
